SANAA: Yemen’s Houthis have said that an Israeli air strike killed the prime minister of the group’s government in the capital, Sanaa.

Ahmed al-Rahawi was killed in a Thursday strike in Sanaa along with a number of ministers, Al Jazeera reported, quoting a statement on Saturday.

Al-Rahawi, who served as prime minister to the Houthi-led government in the areas of the divided country that it controls since August 2024, was targeted along with other members of the government, who were also killed, during a routine workshop held by the government to evaluate its activities and performance over the past year, the Houthis’ statement said.

The Israeli military announced on Thursday that its forces had carried out a strike on “a Houthi terrorist regime military target” near Sanaa, Yemen.

Israel has launched multiple strikes on Houthi positions in recent months, in response to the group’s attacks on Israeli and Western vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden—actions the Houthis say are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Despite repeated Israeli strikes, the Houthis have said that such attacks will not deter their military operations in support of the Palestinian cause.

Thursday’s strike follows an earlier Israeli assault on Sanaa four days prior, which, according to Yemeni health officials, left 10 people dead and over 90 injured.

On Wednesday, the Houthis claimed responsibility for a missile attack on southern Israel, which Israel said it intercepted.
