WASHINGTON: Chinese President Xi Jinping said Friday that his talks with US President Donald Trump had added “new substance” to the China-US relationship, as the Chinese leader wrapped up a state visit to Washington focused on stabilising ties between the world’s two largest economies.
“This has added new substance to the constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability,” Xi said through an interpreter during tea with Trump and their wives at the White House.
Xi said he and Trump had held “sincere and in-depth exchanges” and reached “common understanding on many issues”.
He described the two leaders as “like two people charting the course for the great ship of China and US relations” and said they had agreed to add new substance to their relationship.
Trump also described the Chinese President’s visit as productive, saying the two sides had made “tremendous strides” and “great strides”.
“I think we’ve made tremendous strides, we’ve made great strides, very positive for both countries,” Trump told reporters during the tea meeting.

Trump Says Farmers Will Benefit
Trump said American farmers would be “very happy” with the outcome of his discussions with Xi.
“I think our farmers are going to be very happy,” Trump said. “A lot of very positive things happened, but America is very happy about this visit and I’m sure China is very happy also.”

He described the visit as “very, very productive” and said there had been “great things for both countries”.
The remarks came on the final day of Xi’s state visit to Washington, his first trip to the US capital in more than a decade.
The two couples had tea in the White House’s Red Room before travelling to the National Archives to view documents including the US Declaration of Independence and Constitution.
Xi Points to Further Meetings
Xi said the two presidents would have two more opportunities to meet this year, pointing to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in China and the Group of 20 (G20) summit in the United States.
“Looking ahead to the remainder of this year, there will be two more opportunities for us to meet each other — firstly the APEC meeting in China and then the G20 summit in the United States,” Xi said.
“I do welcome you, Mr President and the First Lady, to visit China.”
“Thank you very much, we will,” Trump replied.
Xi said China would host the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November, while Trump would host the G20 summit in Florida in December.
Trade, AI Key Issues
The leaders’ remarks came against the backdrop of continuing tensions between Washington and Beijing over trade and advanced artificial intelligence technology.
The two countries have also been navigating a months-long tariff truce.
Trump and Xi held bilateral talks in the Oval Office on Thursday. Trump described the meeting as “great”.
At a state dinner at the White House later that day, Xi said the two sides had reached common understanding on many issues.
Xi also called on China and the United States to “act as responsible major countries” and said he wanted their relationship to be defined by strategic stability.
Trump said the two countries should continue building a relationship that promotes “prosperity and security”.
