BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping is preparing to visit Moscow for a summit with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in the coming months, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the plan.

The report added that Xi Jinping’s meeting with Putin would be part of a push for multi-party talks on peace in Ukraine and allow China to reaffirm its calls that nuclear weapons not be used. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Preparations for the visit are underway, and the date has not been finalized so far, the WSJ said, adding that the Chinese President could visit in April or early May when Russia celebrates its victory over Germany during World War II.

On Tuesday, China’s top diplomat Wang Yi arrived in Moscow as the country appears to be ramping up its diplomatic effort for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine. The visit took place just hours after Putin announced Russia suspended its participation in a landmark nuclear arms treaty with the United States.
