LONDON: Social media platform X suffered a major global outage on Monday, leaving users in several countries unable to access the platform.
According to outage tracker Downdetector, reports of service issues surged to over 25,000 around 13:00 GMT.
The disruption affected users across the United States, United Kingdom, India, Japan, Canada, Australia, France, Germany and other countries.
In the UK, the platform reportedly went down just after 1:00 pm. In the United States, more than 23,000 users experienced issues, while Japan recorded over 45,000 outage reports.
Users reported difficulties loading the main feed and accessing the app.
“When Metro accessed X on a computer, the website loaded but displayed a message reading: ‘Something went wrong. Try reloading,’” Downdetector data showed.
App and website problems
Of the users reporting issues, more than half said they could not load the X app.
Around 20 percent cited problems accessing the main feed, while 16 percent reported difficulties with the website.
Some users expressed frustration on Downdetector.
One said: “Birdapp is held together with duct tape and sticks, if it weren’t for the fact that so many anime artists are still here, I would’ve jumped the boat by now.”
Another wrote: “No notifications showing on web. Delayed replies and follows for last 72 hours.”
The issues reportedly began around 13:05 GMT (1:05 pm local time) on Monday.
Past outages
The cause of the blackout was not immediately clear, and X did not respond to requests for comment.
The platform does not operate a public health status page, leaving the exact reason for the disruption uncertain.
X has experienced similar outages before. In March 2025, tens of thousands of users were unable to access the app, encountering empty feeds and endless loading screens.
Last November, a Cloudflare service disruption affected X along with other major websites.
Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS outages last year also caused global interruptions to popular apps, including Snapchat and Reddit.
Analysts noted that X’s outages come amid ongoing controversies surrounding its AI chatbot, Grok, which previously generated sexualised images of real people, triggering criticism from users worldwide.
