NEW YORK: The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, hailed as the world’s first modular cricket stadium, is gearing up to host the much-anticipated India vs Pakistan match during the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Located in New York City, this innovative venue will witness eight thrilling matches, including Bangladesh taking on South Africa.
Usain Bolt, renowned as the fastest man on earth and an ambassador for the World Cup, joined cricket legends Sir Curtly Ambrose, Shoaib Malik, and Liam Plunkett, along with USA players Corey Anderson and Monank Patel for the official inauguration of the stadium on Wednesday.
Bangladesh will clash with South Africa on June 10th, with an official practice match against India scheduled for June 1st, marking the stadium’s debut in hosting international sides. The highly anticipated India vs Pakistan encounter will be held on June 9th, adding to the excitement.
The unveiling of the stadium’s premium seating areas kickstarted the countdown to the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup fixture in New York, as stated in the ICC’s media release.
According to ICC reports, construction of the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium commenced in January, culminating in a world-class 34,000-seater temporary stadium, a first-of-its-kind for international cricket in the United States. The venue boasts four pitches, with an additional six designated for neighboring practice facilities. These pitches, built in Australia’s Adelaide, were curated in Florida and transported to New York via a convoy of over 20 semi-trailer trucks.
Chris Tetley, ICC’s head of events, expressed excitement about the project’s completion, highlighting the unprecedented nature of bringing the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 to the United States.
The innovative approach, with a temporary venue housing pitches sourced from across the globe, sets a new benchmark for cricket events.
The tournament, co-hosted by the West Indies and the US, is slated to kick off on June 2nd, promising a month of exhilarating cricket action until June 29th.
