ISLAMABAD: Like other regions of the world, World Water Day will be celebrated on March 22 in Pakistan to raise awareness about the water crisis.
The theme for World Water Day 2024, “Water for Peace,” emphasizes the indispensable role water plays in fostering global stability and prosperity.
Since its establishment in 1993, World Water Day has been marked annually on March 22, following the declaration by the United Nations General Assembly.
On this occasion, the UN and its member states commit to implementing UN recommendations and advancing tangible initiatives to tackle worldwide water challenges.
According to the United Nations, more than 3 billion people globally depend on water sources that cross national boundaries. However, only 24 out of 153 countries sharing water resources have cooperation agreements with their neighbors.
Amidst escalating impacts of climate change and a growing global population, it becomes imperative for us to join hands in safeguarding and preserving our most precious resource.
By prioritizing the equitable balancing of human rights and needs, water can function as a stabilizing force and a driver for sustainable development.
World Water Day serves as a platform for the United Nations to raise awareness about critical water-related issues and to inspire collective action to tackle the water and sanitation crisis.
This year, the Task Force of UN-Water Members and Partners is led by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). —APP
