New York: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has unanimously approved a resolution, proposed by Bangladesh, to declare July 6 as “World Rural Development Day”, marking the culmination of the step taken by Bangladesh.

The UNGA acted by approving — without a vote — the resolution, which was co-sponsored by Pakistan and 42 other nations, highlighting the significance of rural development.  The resolution seeks to provide equal opportunities and meet the needs of rural areas and people in pursuit of the world community’s anti-poverty Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Bangladesh’s United Nations envoy Muhammad Abdul Muhith has introduced the resolution, highlighting the need to address critical areas like reducing poverty, growing food production, advancing socio-economic growth as well as restoring ecosystems.

Selecting July 6 honors, the establishment date of the Center for Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) in 1979, recognizing its main contribution to rural development in the region.

The resolution also calls on all UN Member nations, as well as global and regional organizations, NGOs, and other stakeholders, to observe this day with activities appropriate to their national and regional conditions.

These steps aim to foster sustainable development and enhance the living standards of rural populations.
