UK PM Asks World for Contributions to Combat Climate Change

LONDON: Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak welcomed the Loss and Damage Fund deal at the COP27 UN climate summit in Sharm El Sheikh; however, he asked the world community for more contributions to combat the climate change issue.

The UK PM welcomed the progress made at the COP27 UN climate summit; however, he warned that the world did not have the time for complacency.

In a statement on Twitter, Rishi Sunak said that more is needed to be done to combat climate losses and damages.

The UK PM said that the 1.5 degrees commitment is very crucial for the future security of the planet.

On Sunday, the COP27 participants agreed to create a fund to address the losses and damages caused by climate-induced catastrophes in developing countries.

Sunak attended the summit, but only after U-turning, having provoked anger by initially refusing to attend the global event.

Sunak had argued that “pressing domestic commitments” would keep him away from the COP27 UN climate summit in Egypt — after inheriting an economic crisis from predecessor Liz Truss.
