UNITED NATIONS, United States: The UN Thursday said it was working on establishing an aid airlift to Haiti that will bring much needed aid into the country hit by political instability and street violence.

The helicopter air connection will involve “flying in and out between Dominican Republic and Haiti,” Stephane Dujarric, the secretary-general’s spokesman, said, correcting his earlier statement that it was already operational.

“It’s bringing in some supplies. It’s also taking some UN staff out and bringing other UN staff in,” he added.

Gunfire rang out in Haiti’s capital on Thursday, ending three days of relative calm as politicians continue talks to form a transitional governing body after a gang insurgency in the country.

These armed gangs rioted two weeks ago, claiming they wanted to overthrow Prime Minister Ariel Henry, and plunged the country into dire poverty with threats of famine and civil war.

Bodies have littered the streets in recent days as normal social order has broken down, but the past three days have been somewhat calmer.

But during the night and morning hours of Wednesday and Thursday, shootings with automatic weapons increased in Port-au-Prince, 80 percent of which is controlled by gangs.

It was not immediately clear who was shooting at whom or what.
