ISLAMABAD: Known as one of the world’s greenest and most picturesque capitals, Islamabad is set to add another crown jewel to its landscape — a world-class cricket stadium nestled at the foot of the Margalla Hills.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to immediately begin construction on the long-awaited project, envisioned as one of the most scenic sporting venues globally.
During a high-level meeting reviewing ongoing and upcoming development initiatives, Minister Naqvi instructed the CDA to start work on the new cricket stadium, which will be built on 25 acres of land near Sector D-12 and Shah Allah Ditta — a location nestled in the foothills of the magnificent Margalla Hills.
Officials briefed the minister that the CDA had received a design proposal from Dubai, envisioning a modern 30,000-seat stadium. The plan combines cutting-edge architecture with natural beauty, promising to make it one of the most scenic cricket venues in the world.
Situated against the lush green backdrop of the Margalla range, the stadium will showcase Islamabad’s serene charm — often described as one of the most beautiful capitals globally.
Financial details
Although financing details have yet to be finalised, it is expected that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will undertake the project. The CDA had previously offered the same land to the PCB in 2023.
A similar project at Shakarparian was halted in 2018 by the Supreme Court, which ruled that the site fell within the protected Margalla Hills National Park.
However, this new location avoids those restrictions, paving the way for construction to begin soon.
Officials noted that once complete, the Islamabad cricket stadium could host major international fixtures while enhancing the city’s landscape and tourism appeal — blending sport, nature, and national pride in a truly iconic setting.
