UTTAR PRADESH, India: In the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, a series of tragic events have unfolded as a pack of wolves has been reported to have killed nine people, eight of whom were children.
The attacks have occurred over the past two months in Bahraich district, instilling fear among the local population. In response, hundreds of Indian police officers have been deployed to track down the wolves, while terrified residents keep all-night vigils, deploy guard dogs, and use firecrackers in a desperate attempt to ward off the predators.
The most recent attack took place in the early hours of Sunday morning when a six-year-old boy, sleeping on the veranda of his home, was seized by a wolf. His mother, Gudiya, described the horrifying moment she awoke to find her son in the jaws of the animal. Acting on instinct, she managed to pull her son free, saving his life.

Experts explain that wolves typically avoid human contact and prefer to hunt smaller prey, such as antelopes. However, extreme flooding caused by torrential monsoon rains has devastated the wolves’ natural habitat, forcing them to venture into more populated areas in search of food.
State forestry official Ajeet Kumar Singh, who is leading the hunt, noted that the scarcity of their usual prey has driven the wolves to take desperate risks they would not ordinarily consider.
The situation in Bahraich district, located about 50 kilometers south of the Nepalese border, highlights the devastating impact of climate change on wildlife and human communities alike. As the hunt for the wolves continues, the local population remains on high alert, hoping for a swift resolution to the crisis.
