Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan came to power, with RSF chief Mohamed Hamdan Daglo as his deputy, in an Oct 2021 coup that also derailed a fragile transition to civilian rule after the military’s ouster of Omar Al-Bashir in April 2019 following an uprising. Fighting between the army and RSF broke out on April 15 as both sides vied for power amid a planned transition to civilian government. As many as 580 people have been killed in Khartoum, and over 3 million become homeless, throwing the African nation into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
