SYDNEY: Widespread flooding in Australia necessitated the rescue of hundreds of people after a natural disaster was declared in regions across New South Wales on Sunday. Intense rainfall over the weekend prompted the evacuation of approximately 300 homes in northeast Sydney, according to emergency services.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management Catherine King noted that floodwaters had caused extensive damage across the state in a remarkably short time. “The New South Wales government is continuing to assess the damage and understand the impact of this disaster,” King added.

State Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib reported that emergency crews had conducted about 200 flood rescues since Friday, with some regions becoming isolated due to damaged or flooded roads. Dib also highlighted the efforts of around 5,000 volunteers who worked tirelessly through the night to assist those affected.

State Emergency Commissioner Carlene York indicated that 60 community warnings remained active for flooded regions. Disaster support measures were initiated in a dozen areas to cover cleanup costs and provide emergency accommodation. This event marked the region’s seventh flood in the past 18 months.

Researchers have consistently warned that climate change increases the likelihood of natural disasters such as floods, bushfires, and cyclones.
