ISLAMABAD: Beneath the ornate chandeliers of the Plaza Hotel’s Oak Room, the Pakistan Super League signalled its ambitions for the future. The historic New York venue, synonymous with high-level business dealings, hosted a presentation to prospective investors, many from the global Pakistani diaspora, as the PSL mapped out plans for its next phase of growth.
Why London and New York Matter
Leading the discussions was Pakistan Super League CEO Salman Naseer, who outlined why the league is shifting its focus beyond national borders. London and New York, home to two of the largest Pakistani communities outside Pakistan and among the world’s most influential financial centres, have been identified as strategic hubs for expansion.

From Stability to Global Growth
Reflecting on the league’s evolution, Naseer said the PSL’s priorities have changed since its launch a decade ago. “This next decade is about making the PSL a global league,” he explained. With international cricket firmly restored in Pakistan, attention has now turned to global reach and commercial scale.
Two New Franchises on the Horizon
The PSL plans to add two teams ahead of the upcoming season, with franchise rights set to be auctioned in Islamabad on January 8. While existing teams are owned by Pakistan-based groups, the league is actively engaging overseas investors, including expatriate Pakistanis as well as private equity and hedge funds.

Strong Commercial Momentum
Despite facing disruptions from Covid, scheduling pressures and competition from the Indian Premier League, the PSL’s business metrics continue to climb. International media rights have increased by more than 300 per cent since 2015, and last season attracted billions of digital views across streaming platforms.
A Pakistani League at Its Core
Naseer emphasised that international expansion will not dilute the league’s identity. “At its core, it’s a Pakistani league,” he said, reaffirming that nurturing local talent and strengthening domestic pathways will remain central to the PSL’s mission.
Looking Ahead
With roadshows held in both London and New York, including a presentation at Lord’s, the PSL has made its intentions clear. As it prepares to welcome new franchises and broaden its global presence, Pakistan’s premier T20 league is positioning itself not just to endure, but to assert itself confidently on the international stage.
