GENEVA: The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday said it was happy that China was now easing its coronavirus0 restrictions, in the wake of countrywide protests over government’s hardline response to the pandemic.
Discontent forced citizens to the streets last weekend and expanded into demand for more political freedom, during the nationwide protest demonstrations.
On Friday, several cities of China further eased coronavirus restrictions, relaxing quarantine and testing rules.
WHO Pleased with China Adjusting Covid Strategies: Emergency Director
“We are pleased to know that the Chinese government is adjusting its current counter Covid-19 strategies,” balancing control measures according to the lives of communities who have suffered due to these restrictions, Emergencies Director of WHO, Michael Ryan said during a news conference.
He said that World Health Organization hope this progresses and see that calibrated, coherent strategy come into force that balances the control of the coronavirus with human rights, lives, wellbeing, and livelihoods of the Chinese people.
The WHO director said there were “natural frustrations” worldwide as the lives of people were turned upside-down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It is really critical that government authorities listen to their citizens when people are in pain due to its policies. We really wish to see that adjustment takes place and accelerate,” he said. – APP
