Who is Lt-Gen Syed Asim Munir?

After much hullabaloo and guessing, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif finally picked Lt-Gen Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah to replace the outgoing Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Lt-Gen Asim Munir HI(M) is a three-star general is currently serving as a Quartermaster General in the Pakistan Army.

He commanded the Gujranwala Corps from June 17, 2019 to October 6, 2021.

Lt-Gen Asim Munir also served as the director-general ISI until Lt-Gen Faiz Hameed replaced him on June 16, 2019. He is also a holder of the Sword of Honour.

The newly named army chief Lt-Gen Asim Munir joined the army from the 17th Officers Training School in Mangla. He is commissioned in the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment. He was promoted to Lt-Gen in September 2018.

Lt-Gen Asim Munir previously served as the Director General of Military Intelligence. He was awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz in March 2018. He also commanded the troops deployed in the Northern Areas of Pakistan.

In June 2019, Lt-Gen Asim Munir was replaced by Lt-Gen Faiz Hameed as the new DG ISI. He was transferred and appointed as the Corps Commander of the Corps in Gujranwala.
