WHO ‘Extremely Worried’ at prospect of Outbreaks in Gaza

GENEVA: A top WHO official has said that he is “extremely worried” over possible outbreaks in war-hit Gaza following poliovirus was detected in the sewage, that communicable diseases could cause more deaths than injuries.

Ayadil Saparbekov, the World Health Organization’s chief of health emergencies in the occupied Palestinian territories, said the number of people in Gaza now needing to be evacuated from the territory for medical treatment may have increased to 14,000.

Meanwhile, Gaza Health Ministry said that around 89 people have been killed in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis area since Israel started a new military offensive in the region yesterday morning without giving civilians time to leave. Hundreds of people have been injured in brutal Israeli offensive in the region.

Local media reported that two people were killed in recent hours and a number of others wounded in Israeli bombing that attacked the Mirage area, Khan Younis.

Another Palestinian was killed by Israeli military snipers in the Bani Suheila town, east of Khan Younis, Arab media reported.
