GAZA: The World Health Organization (WHO) in Gaza announced on Tuesday that it is exceeding its initial targets for polio vaccinations just three days into a mass immunization campaign.
Rik Peeperkorn, the WHO representative for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, reported that over 161,000 children under the age of 10 have already been vaccinated in the central region of Gaza, surpassing the projected target of 150,000 within the first two days.
“Up until now, things are going well,” Peeperkorn stated, expressing cautious optimism about the progress of the campaign. He highlighted the effectiveness of the humanitarian pauses that have facilitated the vaccination drive, noting, “These humanitarian pauses, up until now, they work. We still have ten days to go.”
The success of the vaccination campaign amid ongoing challenges reflects the dedication of healthcare workers and the critical importance of sustained humanitarian access in conflict-affected areas. The campaign’s continuation and its ability to reach more children in need will rely on maintaining these vital humanitarian corridors.
