WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden’s top national security advisor will brief Congress on an evolving threat to US national security which the House Intelligence Committee chair has termed as serious.
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has told journalists that he will host a briefing with the chair and member of the House panel, along with House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, on Thursday.
The House Intelligence panel chairman, Ohio Representative Mike Turner, in a statement on Wednesday warned against serious national security threat calling President Biden to declassify all information so that Congress, the Administration can openly talk about the actions necessary to respond to this threat.
Sullivan refused to specify any details on the issue but he said the congressman’s statement was unexpected as the briefing with House leaders was previously scheduled.
He also said he had personally contacted the party leaders and chairmen and ranking members of the House and Senate intelligence committees early this week to schedule a briefing.
“That’s been on the books so I am a bit surprised that Congressman Turner came out publicly today, in advance of a meeting on the books, for me to go sit with him alongside our intelligence and defense professionals tomorrow,” he said.
He went on to say that he was not in a position to disclose any details, however, he said that he was ready to sit-down with Turner and his colleagues.
He said after the meeting they will be able to determine how to proceed further.
