ISLAMABAD: As part of a coordinated move with European allies and Germany, the White House formally announced on Wednesday that it will be sending 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
The government of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had been reluctant in providing German-made tanks without Washington pledging its own tanks first.
The issue threatened to crack an alliance that has more or less stayed together since the start of the Russian invasion.
A senior US official stated that today’s announcement reflects our unity, which has been our greatest strength.
US needs to procure Abrams tanks from its defence industry
The Abrams tanks will take a few months to arrive in Ukraine as Washington has to procure the weaponry from its defence industry.
As per US rules, the tanks in American stocks cannot be sent to Ukraine.
