WASHINGTON, USA: The New York Times claims that China’s nuclear arsenal is growing, the White House reiterated on Tuesday that a confidential nuclear strategic plan approved by President Joe Biden this year is not focused on any one nation or threat.

According to White House spokesperson Sean Savett, the guidance issued is part of routine updates that occur approximately every four years, rather than a reaction to any specific nation, including China.

The Arms Control Association, a U.S.-based organization, confirmed that the U.S. nuclear weapons strategy remains consistent with the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review and has not shifted focus from Russia to China. Although China is reportedly expanding its nuclear capabilities, with estimates suggesting it could grow its arsenal from 500 to 1,000 warheads by 2030, Russia remains the primary driver behind U.S. nuclear strategy, possessing around 4,000 warheads.

Daryl Kimball, the executive director of the Arms Control Association, referenced remarks from Pranay Vaddi, the White House Senior Director for Arms Control, Disarmament, and Nonproliferation, who stated that U.S. strategy aims to pursue nuclear arms restraints with both China and Russia. However, if China’s growth and Russia’s potential breach of New START limits continue, the U.S. might consider adjusting its nuclear force size and composition after 2030.
