QUETTA: The wheat crisis in Balochistan is getting serious with each passing day, and the patience of the citizens has run out due to the non-availability of flour at official rates.
The protestors staged a dharna on the highway leading to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat here. When the citizens searching for subsidized flour did not get it for two days, they blocked the Zarghun Road leading to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
An older man came to get flour, lying down on the road, and kept saying that drive a car over us, finish us off, we will not be there, nor will we come to get flour. Citizens said that they were dying of hunger.
Wheat supply line cut
Deputy Director Food Balochistan Salman Kakar said that out of the two lacs sacks of wheat purchased from Pakistan Agricultural Storage & Services Corporation (PASCO) by the Food Department, only a few thousand sacks had reached Quetta; we are giving a 20 kg bag to the people in Rs. 1471 but our supply line that feeds Balochistan from Punjab and Sindh was cut off, so the situation turned grave.
Citizens of Balochistan have said that the government’s indifference during the wheat and flour crisis in the province is unfortunate. The protestors demand that the government immediately take comprehensive and effective measures to control the supply and rising prices of wheat and flour in the province.
