MENLO PARK: Meta Platforms Inc’s WhatsApp has said that the users of the app will now be able to utilize proxy servers to make access the service in countries where the application is blocked, media reported on Thursday.

A proxy server is an intermediary between web services and users and acts as a web filter that permits users to circumvent censorship and restrictions. According to WhatsApp proxy support on the messaging app is now formally available for users with the new version. Users in countries like Syria and Iran have used VPN services to circumnavigate internet censorship.
WhatsApp said that in case these closures continue, they hope this solution helps people wherever there is a need for reliable and secure communication.

The messaging service app said that it was not blocking Iranian phone numbers and will do anything within its technical ability to keep the service accessible. Iran constrained access to WhatsApp and Instagram following protests broke out in response to the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by morality police in Tehran for violating the country’s dress code.
