LONDON: WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform owned by Meta, is set to introduce a new feature designed to bolster user privacy by allowing users to chat without revealing their phone numbers. The feature is currently in the beta testing phase.
The upcoming update, part of WhatsApp Beta version 2.24.18.2 for Android, introduces a username-based system where users can create and utilize unique identifiers for communication. This new functionality will enable users to initiate chats and interact with others solely through these usernames, rather than their phone numbers.
Users will be able to establish and share a unique username linked to their WhatsApp account. When initiating a conversation, only the username will be visible to the recipient, enhancing privacy by masking the user’s phone number. However, users who have each other’s phone numbers saved will still see the phone numbers in their contacts.
Another significant update in the beta version is a new feature aimed at reducing spam. Users who have not previously interacted with a contact will be required to enter a PIN (at least four digits) before initiating a chat, even if they know the other person’s username.
WhatsApp is also developing another update focused on status updates. The “Reshare Status Updates” feature will allow users to easily reshare status updates in which they have been mentioned, similar to the functionality available on Instagram. This feature aims to simplify content sharing among contacts and enhance user engagement on the platform.
While the new username feature and PIN support are currently in beta testing, there is no official timeline for their full rollout. Industry reports suggest that Meta may not make these features available to all users until later in the year.
