KEY POINTS

  • Pakistan’s new passport design will include cutting-edge security features.
  • The redesigned passport will meet international standards.
  • E-passport integration will allow faster processing at airports.
  • The new passport will be gradually rolled out from early 2026.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to introduce a redesigned passport in 2026, featuring advanced biometric technology, modern aesthetics, and upgraded biometric technology and enhanced security elements to meet global standards.

The new passports are expected to roll out between January and March 2026, with the first batches issued across key passport centers in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore.

The redesign is part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to modernize its e-governance and digital security infrastructure.

According to the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP), the new passport is set to meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and is designed to make border clearance more efficient while safeguarding citizens against identity theft and fraud.

Key Features of the 2026 Passport Design

The 2026 passport features both visual and technological upgrades that aim to enhance security and international compatibility. Here are the key highlights:

  • Biometric Microchip: Embedded in the passport for fast identity verification and smoother border processing.
  • Enhanced Holographic Layer: A sophisticated layer added to prevent unauthorized duplication or reproduction.
  • Laser-Engraved Personal Data: Ensures that the personal data is tamper-proof and resistant to alteration.
  • Modern Cover Design: Featuring an updated national emblem and a deep green texture, the new passport offers a premium, sleek appearance.
  • Machine-Readable QR Code: A modern touch for easier and faster verification at global immigration desks.

These innovations will help Pakistan comply with global security protocols and reduce passport fraud, making it safer and more efficient for citizens traveling abroad.

The Need for a New Design

The previous Pakistani passport design had become outdated, lacking the robust data protection features needed to keep up with the rise in global travel and increasingly sophisticated forgeries.

With these changes, the DGIP hopes to meet international security standards and improve global travel experiences for Pakistanis.

“The new design is not just about security, but also about showcasing Pakistan’s identity,” said a senior DGIP official.

The design elements are inspired by the country’s rich cultural heritage, symbolized through the national emblem and the vibrant green colour scheme.

Launch and Implementation

The launch of the new passport will begin in the first quarter of 2026, with the system gradually rolling out across Pakistan. Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi will be the first to see the new passports, with the rollout extending nationwide by mid-2026.

To prepare, the DGIP has been upgrading biometric systems in passport offices and training staff to ensure a smooth transition.

The project is part of a Rs. 2.3 billion modernization initiative under the Ministry of Interior aimed at upgrading the national passport infrastructure.

Along with biometric verification, Pakistanis will benefit from a more streamlined and secure passport process, especially when traveling through e-gates at airports.

E-Passport Integration and Benefits

In addition to the updated design, the 2026 passport will integrate with the e-passport system, which was first introduced in major cities and is now being expanded across the country. Benefits of the new passport include:

  • Faster Processing: Through e-gates, Pakistanis will experience quicker clearance at airports.
  • Enhanced Data Security: Advanced digital encryption will protect citizens’ personal information.
  • Global Acceptance: With improved security and design, the passport will be more readily accepted at international checkpoints.

DGIP officials note that the new passports will help raise Pakistan’s global standing, especially in terms of ease of travel for overseas Pakistanis, whose international mobility is often hindered by outdated travel documents.

Passport Fees and Renewal

Despite the new design and features, the passport fee structure will remain unchanged for 2026.

Citizens will still be able to choose between 36-page, 72-page, or 100-page passports, with both ordinary and urgent processing options available.

Existing passports will remain valid until their expiration, but all new applicants or renewals will receive the upgraded design.

Experts believe that stronger security features will not only enhance the travel experience but also improve Pakistan’s passport ranking globally.
