WASHINGTON: Former US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he could offer his services as Speaker of the US House of Representatives and act as a unifier if Republicans could not agree on a candidate for the slot, Western media reported.

Trump’s Plans

He expressed the remarks after the historic removal of the speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy. The former President gave a hint as Trump intends to visit the House in the upcoming week.

The development comes as Kevin McCarthy was ousted as a small number of fellow Republican lawmakers joined in an attempt initiated by Democrat legislators to remove the leader of the House with a 216-210 vote.

According to media reports, a presidential candidate can take the office of the Speaker technically following the post is vacant due to the removal of Kevin McCarthy.

Patrick McHenry from the Republican— who is also a close ally of ousted speaker, was named as acting Speaker of the House.

In an interview with Fox News Trump said that he was contacted by Republicans to take the position and would present his services until a replacement is found.

The House rules say, a non-member can become a leader of the House, however, his indictments can avert him from becoming the speaker of the House.
