UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) witnessed a battle over a Jordanian-led resolution that called for a “humanitarian truce” in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The resolution withstood a last-minute Western attempt, led by Canada and backed by the United States, to amend it in favor of Israel.

During this critical moment, Pakistan Ambassador to the UN Munir Akram delivered a compelling speech defending the original resolution. He criticized the one-sided nature of the Canadian amendment, highlighting the need for a fair and equitable approach that doesn’t single out one party.

Canada introduced an amendment seeking to unequivocally reject and condemn “Hamas attacks” in Israel, along with the taking of hostages.

India Voted for Amendment in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

However, the amendment, which required a two-thirds majority, failed to garner enough support, with 88 votes in favor, 55 against, and 23 abstentions. India, a strategic ally of Israel, voted for the amendment in favour of Israel.

Pakistan Urges Fairness in UN Debate Over Gaza Resolution

In his speech, Ambassador Munir Akram emphasized the root cause of the conflict, pointing to the 50 years of Israeli occupation and the violence against Palestinians. He urged fairness and impartiality.

Following the defeat of the amendment, the UNGA passed the resolution with overwhelming support, receiving 120 votes in favor, 14 against, and 45 abstentions. France, breaking ranks with its Western allies, voted in favor, emphasizing the importance of a humanitarian truce in Gaza.

The resolution calls for the immediate, continuous, and sufficient provision of essential goods and services to Gaza’s civilians, including water, food, medical supplies, fuel, and electricity. It also urges humanitarian access to Gaza and the establishment of humanitarian corridors.

Furthermore, the resolution demands compliance with international law, particularly regarding the protection of civilians and civilian objects. It rejects forced population transfers and calls for the release of all illegally held civilians.

The resolution underscores the grave impact of armed conflict on vulnerable groups, especially women, children, and persons with disabilities. It highlights the need for mechanisms to protect civilians and humanitarian installations.

The resolution also emphasizes the importance of a peaceful, two-state solution based on relevant UN resolutions and international law for a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
