ISLAMABAD: West Indies claimed a dramatic five-wicket win over Pakistan in a rain-affected second ODI at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba on Sunday, levelling the three-match series at 1-1.

Chasing a revised target of 181 in 35 overs, the hosts reached their goal in 33.2 overs, thanks to key contributions from Roston Chase, Sherfane Rutherford, and skipper Shai Hope.

Pakistan struck early, with Hasan Ali removing both openers – Brandon King (1) and Evin Lewis (7) – within the first four overs, reducing West Indies to 12 for 2. The pressure increased when Keacy Carty was dismissed for 16 off 42 balls, giving Abrar Ahmed his first wicket.

Counter-attacking innings

Rutherford responded with a counter-attacking innings, striking Shaheen Afridi for 17 runs in one over, including two boundaries and a six. He followed up with another flurry, hitting 20 runs off Abrar as he and Hope added 50 for the fourth wicket.

Hope’s steady knock of 32 off 35 balls was cut short by Mohammad Nawaz, who later also removed Rutherford for 45 off 33 balls (four fours, three sixes), leaving the hosts 104 for 5.

However, Chase and Justin Greaves ensured there was no further uncertainty. The duo shared an unbeaten 77-run stand, with Chase finishing on 49 not out off 47 balls and Greaves contributing 26 from 31 deliveries.

Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to contain the middle and lower order, with Hasan Ali and Nawaz picking up two wickets each, and Abrar Ahmed claiming one.

Double-wicket maiden

Earlier, Pakistan started steadily, reaching 37 without loss before Jayden Seales turned the tide with a double-wicket maiden – dismissing Saim Ayub (23) and Babar Azam for a duck.

Abdullah Shafique (26) and Mohammad Rizwan (16) tried to rebuild but fell to disciplined West Indies bowling. At 88 for 4 after 22 overs, Pakistan were in trouble.

Hussain Talat chipped in with 31 before edging to the keeper off Chase, while Hasan Nawaz added late impetus with a brisk unbeaten 36 off 30 balls, supported by Shaheen Afridi’s 11*.

Seales was the standout bowler with 3 for 23 in seven overs. Blades, Joseph, Motie, and Chase each claimed a wicket to cap off a strong team performance.
