MAHARASHTRA: Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister of India’s wealthiest state of Maharashtra, was killed on Wednesday when a chartered aircraft he was travelling in crashed and caught fire, aviation authorities said. Four other people on board also died in the incident.
Pawar, a senior political leader from a prominent political family, was travelling to his home region to campaign for local body elections, according to media reports.
The aircraft, a Learjet 45 operated by VSR Ventures, was carrying two members of Pawar’s staff and two crew members at the time of the crash, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed.
