DUBAI: Pakistan’s cricket icon Wasim Akram has cautioned that the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 will be a formidable challenge for Team India, given Pakistan’s current momentum and habit of winning matches. As the highly anticipated tournament kicks off on August 30, all eyes are on the clash between cricket titans India and Pakistan scheduled for September 2.

Speaking to the media in Dubai, the renowned Sultan of Swing emphasized that the Asia Cup is a lengthy tournament where no team can secure a spot in the semi-finals with a single match victory. This year’s edition will revert to the 50-over format after being held in the T20 version last year, a change that Akram appreciated.

Akram highlighted the importance of a game-by-game approach for all participating teams, underscoring the necessity of securing victories to emerge at the top. He noted that the shift to the 50-over format requires a different mindset and fitness level, posing a new challenge for the subcontinent’s bowlers, who must now deliver 10 overs instead of the previous four in T20 matches.

Pakistan’s Strategy for Asia Cup

Reflecting on Pakistan’s strategy in recent matches, Akram noted that the team and management are employing innovative tactics. He asserted that Pakistan’s squad announcement for the Asia Cup signals a tough competition for all teams, including India. Akram acknowledged the potential of India and Pakistan as vital contenders, while also cautioning against overlooking other teams, recalling how Sri Lanka emerged victorious in the last edition.

While labeling India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka as dangerous opponents, Akram stressed the competitiveness of all three teams in the tournament. He shared his positive perspective on Pakistan’s skipper, Babar Azam, lauding his progress in learning captaincy skills and delivering on the field. Akram also applauded the unity within the Pakistani team, deeming it a promising sign for their performance.
