TOKYO: Japan is making efforts to acquire four hundred to five hundred U.S.-made Tomahawk missiles, The Washington Post reported on Monday.

The newspaper claimed that the missile buy will boost Tokyo’s long range strike ability and mark a stunning stop with a long tradition of eschewing offensive arms.

The US media outlet said that Tokyo is likely to reveal its new security and defense strategy in this week. Japan plans to boost defense spending to 2 % of GDP.

A former Japanese ambassador to the United States (US) told to The Washington Post that they wanted to limit its defense budget and try not to obtain second strike capability.

However, the situation surrounding them does not allow Japan to do that, the ambassador remarked. The ambassador was of the view that many people thought war was a 20th-century problem, but they are now seeing that again.
