Washington Likely to Impose Fresh Sanctions Against Occupied West Bank Outposts: Report

WASHINGTON: The Biden Administration is likely to impose new sanctions on two unlawful outposts in the occupied West Bank that were used as a base for assaults by “extremist” Israeli settlers against Palestinian people, Axios reported on Wednesday, citing three American officials.

The sanctions, likely to be imposed on Thursday, are intended to send a message that Washington is not only targeting persons but also entities involved in providing financial and logistical support to assaults against Palestinian people, the report said.

The report maintained that the fresh sanctions will also be imposed on three Israeli settlers. However, the US State Department did not immediately issue remarks over the Axios report.

Earlier, in February, the Biden administration had imposed sanctions on 4 Israeli settlers as they were involved in settler violence in the Occupied West Bank. It showing growing Washington’s displeasure with the policies of Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Biden Administration had said in February that Israel’s expansion of settlements in the West Bank was completely inconsistent with global law.

Israeli military has stepped up attacks in the Occupied West Bank since the Gaza war started in October. According to the UN’s records more than 358 people have been killed since Oct. 7, in the Palestinian territory.  The death toll in the Gaza Strip has passed 31,000 since October 7, when Hamas stormed into Israel.
