WASHINGTON: The United States has called for restraint from both sides as the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf battle it out on the road leading to D Chowk in Red Zone, Islamabad.
Matthew Miller US State Department spokesperson in a press briefing stated, “We call on Pakistani authorities to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and to ensure respect for Pakistan’s laws and constitution as they work to maintain law and order.”
The spokesperson called on protesters to “demonstrate peacefully and refrain from violence”
The clashes between police and protestors have resulted in six security personnel getting killed including four rangers and two policemen.
The protestors are demanding the release of their founder and have managed to enter Islamabad in various convoys defying roadblocks and other measures taken by the government.
Despite Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s warning against crossing the “red line” and failure to go to Sangjani, Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi — who is leading one of the protest convoys — has insisted on progressing to D-Chowk.
