War on Gaza: Thousands Rally in Jordan for Ceasefire

AMMAN: More than 5,000 people staged protest demonstrations on Friday in Amman, Jordan calling on King Abdullah II to press for a truce in war Hamas and Israel in Gaza.

According to AFP, speaking at the protestors, legislator Yanal Fraihat said they wanted the king “to stop the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip” by using Jordan’s peace deal with Israel as leverage. The protests came a day ahead of a trip by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who was to hold discussion over the current war in Gaza with his Jordanian Foreign Minister.

Israel has launched an intense war against Hamas after it carried out a surprise October 7 operation in Israel. The protest outside a mosque near the Israeli Embassy in Amman, Jordan held amid a heavy presence of security forces.

Another protest demonstration with more than 1,500 protesters took place in the front of a prominent mosque in central Amman. Protestors were chanting slogans in support of the Palestinian people “resistance” and against Israel. In 1994, Jordan became the second regional country to make peace with Israel following Egypt in 1979. More than 2 million Palestinian refugees are living in Jordan.

Earlier, Jordan said it would “immediately” recall its envoy to Israel to protest the current war in Gaza.

Since the war began in the Gaza Strip, Jordan has seen large protest demonstrations in support of Gaza, with protestors demanding that Jordan annul the peace agreement with Israel and close the Israeli Embassy in the country.
