KARACHI: Polling is underway for the second phase of the much-delayed local government (LG) elections in 16 districts of Sindh – including Karachi and Hyderabad divisions.
Around 8 million people are expected to exercise their right to vote in the LG polls which began at 8 am and will go on till 5 pm. As many as 8,876 polling stations have been set up with strict security arrangements alongside CCTV cameras.
MQM-P boycotted Sindh LG Polls
Hours before the polls were set to begin, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) announced a boycott of the local bodies elections being held in Sindh today.
The party’s statement came after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday announced to hold the second phase of LG polls in Sindh on January 15. The electoral body made the decision despite the provincial government’s announcement to delay the polls amid its coalition party MQM-P’s demands for fresh delimitation before holding the local body elections.
