DELHI: The Indian Premier League has fined two players, including star cricketer Virat Kohli, and the team mentor, for the altercation caught on camera.
Kohli and Lucknow Super Giants’ mentor Gambhir were fined 100 per cent of their fee for an Indian Premier League match on Monday.
Naveen-ul-Haq, an Afghan bowler who plays for the Giants, was also fined 50per cent of his fee.
Gambhir and Kohli are ex-Indian captains. Gautam Gambhir retired from all forms of cricket in 2018. The altercation occurred after a match in which Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated the Giants. Bangalore beat Lucknow to record fifth Indian Premier League win.
The heated expression was captured on cameras, but no voice was available, making it hard to confirm what it was about. Gambhir and Kohli can make aggressive gestures against each other in different clips.
A statement issued by the Indian Premier League said that both Kohli and Gambhir had admitted to the Level 2 offence under Article 2.21 of the Indian Premier League Code of Conduct, which deals with acts including unruly public behaviour. The statement added that Naveen admitted to the Level 1 offence. Both cricket players are known for being animated on the cricket field.
In April, Kohli was fined 10per cent of his match fee for breaching Indian Premier League rules after Chennai Super Kings defeated his team. While the cricket board didn’t specify the reason, reports said it could have been due to his celebrations after a Chennai Super Kings batsman got out.
