KHARTOUM: The city of Nyala in Sudan’s western Darfur region has been engulfed in violent clashes, prompting residents to flee as the sound of artillery strikes reverberated throughout the area, witnesses reported.

The violence erupted as fighting intensified between Sudan’s army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Hundreds of people had already fled Nyala on Sunday as paramilitary attacks escalated in the region. Darfur, a region with a history of conflict, has become a stronghold for RSF fighters, with reports of alleged “crimes against humanity.” Ethnic minority rebels have long been at odds with various armed groups, including the RSF, leading to a cycle of violence.

Severity of Sudan Conflict

In response to the surge in violence, a medical source at a local facility confirmed receiving 66 injuries and six fatalities on Sunday, despite challenges in accessing medical services due to the ongoing bombardments.

The conflict, which began on April 15, has displaced over four million Sudanese and resulted in a death toll of at least 3,900 people, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project. Refugees have also sought safety in neighboring countries, including Chad, where conditions remain dire due to inadequate shelter and essential supplies.
