HANOI, Vietnam: Today, Vietnam is celebrating its National Day, one of the most momentous events each year, commemorating the establishment of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

President Vo Van Thuong and his spouse hosted a ceremony in Hanoi commemorating Vietnam’s 78th National Day. The event drew a distinguished audience, including high-ranking officials, scholars, intellectuals, business leaders, youth representatives, foreign diplomats, and heads of international organizations in Hanoi.

In his address, President Thuong highlighted the significance of August 1945 when, under the guidance of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh, millions of Vietnamese people came together in a unified effort to carry out the General Uprising. This historic moment led to the overthrowing of oppressive feudal and colonial rule, allowing the people to reclaim their rightful leadership.

President Thuong described the victory of the 1945 August Revolution as one of Vietnam’s most illustrious chapters in history. It underscored the extraordinary strength of national unity and marked the beginning of a transformative era for the Vietnamese nation—a period of national independence rooted in socialist principles. This momentous achievement enabled the people of Vietnam to break free from subjugation and regain control over their country and destiny.

The President also reminisced about September 2, 1945, when President Ho Chi Minh, with solemnity, read the Declaration of Independence at Ba Dinh Square. This declaration heralded the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now known as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

In his proclamation, President Ho Chi Minh conveyed to the world that Vietnam had not only earned the right to enjoy freedom and independence but had indeed become a free and sovereign nation.

He expressed the unwavering determination of the entire Vietnamese population to muster their physical and mental strength, even making the ultimate sacrifices of lives and property to safeguard this newfound freedom and independence.

According to President Thuong, since the Revolutionary Autumn of 1945, guided by the spirit of “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom,” the Vietnamese nation courageously engaged in numerous arduous conflicts. Countless outstanding individuals from this land laid down their lives to pursue national liberation, unification, and homeland defense.

President Thuong emphasized that with the launch of Doi Moi, characterized by the goals of achieving prosperity, a robust democratic nation, equality, and civilization, the people of Vietnam embarked on another determined struggle. This effort aimed to eradicate hunger, poverty, and outdated practices, resulting in historic achievements in socio-economic development. Vietnam has maintained political stability, ensured defense and security, and improved people’s living standards.

The President noted that Vietnam has become a prominent player on the global stage, establishing diplomatic relations with 192 countries and emerging as a dynamic economy in the Asia-Pacific region.

He affirmed Vietnam’s role in various economic partnerships, free trade agreements, and production chains, making it a nation of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development.

President Thuong acknowledged ongoing conflicts and geopolitical tensions in many parts of the world and emphasized the importance of unity, cooperation, multilateralism, and adherence to international law and the UN Charter to ensure global peace and prosperity.
