ISLAMABAD/STRASBOURG: The European Parliament sacked one of its vice presidents on Tuesday amid corruption allegations linked to the World Cup 2022, being played in Qatar.
The MEPs of the European Parliament voted 625-1 against Greek socialist MEP Eva Kaili to remove her from EU’s vice-presidential stint over charges she took a bribe lobbying for the World Cup to be held in Qatar. Despite Kaili’s counsel declaring her innocent, the EB body deprived her of the role after she was arrested.
The government of Qatar has denied any connection to any wrongdoing or getting favour through illegal means to pave the way for FIFIA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

EU’s MEP Eva Kaili was arrested after a series of police raids across homes and offices in Brussels with a recovery of at least $1.6 million in cash from her. She is imprisoned in a Brussels jail cell.
After the arrest of the 44-year-old EU Parliament’s vice-president and former TV news presenter, her colleagues and friends in the EU parliament scrambled to distance themselves from the corruption scandal favouring Qatar for the World- Cup 2022.

A court will on Wednesday decide whether to maintain Kaili and three co-accused MPs in custody pending trial.
