ISLAMABAD: A court in Islamabad has reserved its decision about Pakistan Tahreek -e- Insaaf (PTI) leader Azam Swati’s bail plea in the case involving controversial tweets.
The decision will be announced tomorrow (Friday). The PTI senator was detained by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) last week after a charge was filed against him for tweeting disparaging remarks about the army chief and state institutions.
The FIA prosecutor argued before the court that Swati tweeted a hateful tweet against the army chief and attempted to put discord within the armed forces.
“Azam Swati blamed COAS after certain individuals were acquitted in a case. What does the army chief have to do with their acquittal?” said the prosecutor.
The PTI leader admitted to tweeting while being questioned, the FIA representative said, as he claimed that “Azam Swati made aggressive words against the army chief and institutions at a public forum.”
Swati’s counsel Babar Awan alleged that the senator had been ridiculed and mistreated while being held captive. Swati has the right to expression and had used his right of free expression under the Constitution.
After Azam Swati’s tweet, “Was there a revolt in the army?” he inquired. Has anyone fled their post as a result of Azam Swati’s tweet? When did Captain resign?” Awan added. The judgement was later put on hold by the court and will be announced tomorrow.
