CARACAS: Venezuela’s opposition in parliament voted on Friday to remove interim President Juan Guaido, dissolve his government and form a national commission to manage the country’s foreign assets, as Venezuelan lawmakers seek a united front ahead of elections for 2024.

Interim President as opposition

President Guaido has been the public face of fractious opposition in Venezuela since 2019, when Guaido conjured the constitution to assume charge as an interim president of Venezuela, and received support from the United States (US) and other governments. The US and other Western governments rejected the 2018 re-election of President Nicolas Maduro by stating the 2018 elections as fraudulent polls.

President Maduro and the opposition

Previous President Maduro has remained in control of nearly all Venezuela’s institutions, including its security forces, and his opposition turns the interim government of President Guaido, which has control over some foreign assets and runs many embassies, has seen its support wane.
