ISLAMABAD: The various public and private sector universities, rectors and vice-chancellors have expressed their concerns over the proposed amendments in Higher Education Commission (HEC) Ordinance and the Payment Procedure 2022.
As per sources, two meetings of the university heads of private and public universities were held separately at the Higher Education Commission quarters in Islamabad. Vice-chancellors from Rawalpindi and Islamabad joined the meetings in person, while others attended the meeting virtually. Both forums opposed the proposed amendments to HEC ordinance.
HEC demands
The participants demanded that the government should strengthen the independent status of the Higher Education Commission if it wanted to develop according to international standards. The vice-chancellors noted that amendments like delegation of powers of the controlling authority from the Prime Minister to the ministry concerned, drastic revision in a reduction in the size of the commission and composition, etc., would compromise the primary mission for which the Higher Education Commission was founded.
