BEIJING: The President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting with Jin Liqun, President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), at AIIB’s Headquarters in Beijing.
The leaders engaged in bilateral discussions and mutually agreed to strengthen cooperation and partnerships.
During the meeting, President Mirziyoyev commended AIIB for its rapid growth since inception and its significant role in the multilateral development community. He specifically acknowledged AIIB’s strong governance and adherence to high international standards.
President Jin expressed appreciation for Uzbekistan’s active contribution to AIIB’s development as a founding member. He reiterated AIIB’s strategic commitment to continue supporting Uzbekistan’s sustainable growth.
Both leaders applauded the heightened level of engagement achieved in recent years. They assessed the current infrastructure investment landscape and explored opportunities for further collaboration. Subsequently, a three-year investment program was agreed upon and signed to bolster Uzbekistan’s development across various sectors nationwide.
AIIB has already approved 14 projects in Uzbekistan, totaling USD 3.1 billion, making it the 7th largest portfolio by a member.
In 2023, AIIB announced that its 2024 Annual Meeting would be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on Sep. 25-26. This marks the first time AIIB will host its flagship event in Central Asia.
During the visit to AIIB, the memorandum for hosting the 2024 Annual Meeting was officially signed between AIIB and the Uzbekistan government.
