TASHKENT: Uzbekistan has requested Qatar’s support to advance the Trans-Afghan Railway project, as confirmed after a meeting between Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Discussions during the meeting focused on expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in transportation and logistics, with Qatar expressing its full backing for Uzbekistan’s Trans-Afghan Railway initiative.
In October 2023, Uzbekistan Railways JSC presented the project to Qatar’s Ministry of Transport, leading to talks on Qatar’s potential involvement in the railway’s implementation.
The Termez-Mazar-I-Sharif-Kabul-Peshawar railway, outlined in a roadmap signed by Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan in February 2021, aims to establish a new transport corridor connecting Europe, Russia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Southeast Asia, with an estimated cost of around $5 billion.
