Uzbekistan, Qatar to Establish Joint Intergovernmental Commission

TASHKENT: Uzbekistan and Qatar have announced the establishment of a joint Intergovernmental Commission, with the inaugural meetings set to take place in February 2024 in Doha. The decision emerged following a productive meeting between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan and Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar in Tashkent.

During the discussions, both leaders emphasized the need to strengthen the political dialogue while broadening cooperation across trade, economy, investment, culture, and humanitarian endeavors. The establishment of diplomatic missions in Tashkent and Doha in 2023 signifies a deepening commitment to nurturing diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Acknowledging the ongoing robust interactions, the heads of states expressed satisfaction with the existing exchange mechanisms. The year 2023 witnessed the establishment of diplomatic missions, fostering greater communication and understanding between Uzbekistan and Qatar.

Investment Projects Between Uzbekistan and Qatar

Particular attention was given to the promotion of new joint investment projects, with a strategic focus on key sectors such as “green” energy, industry, agriculture, infrastructure development, banking and finance, education, healthcare, and tourism.

The momentum towards enhanced economic collaboration gained traction in June 2023 when the Emir of Qatar visited Samarkand. During this visit, an agreement was reached, paving the way for leading Qatari companies to participate in investment projects in Uzbekistan, with an impressive total value of $12 billion.

In 2022, trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Qatar reached $4.8 million, setting the stage for expanded economic cooperation in the years to come.
