Uzbekistan Launches Khiva as OIC City of Tourism for 2024

JEDDAH: The Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan organized a ceremony to launch Khiva City as the OIC City of Tourism for 2024, in accordance with the resolution of the 11th Islamic Conference of Tourism Ministers.

The event took place in Khiva, Uzbekistan, on March 5, 2024, and was presided over by His Excellency Mr. Djamshid Abdusalamov, First Deputy Chairman of the Tourism Committee of Uzbekistan.

Officials from the Governorate of Khorezm Province and the Khiva City, along with representatives from OIC institutions including IRCICA and SMIIC, attended the ceremony. Additionally, Brahim Hissein Taha, the OIC Secretary-General, conveyed his congratulations to the Government and people of Uzbekistan through a message delivered by His Excellency Dr. Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Affairs.

In his message, the Secretary-General expressed hope that the designation of Khiva as the OIC City of Tourism would contribute to showcasing the city’s rich cultural heritage and hospitality to visitors from OIC Member States and beyond. Various programs and activities planned for 2024 aim to promote Khiva as a desirable travel destination and highlight the warmth of Uzbek hospitality.

Among the scheduled events is the 12th Islamic Conference of Tourism Ministers, scheduled to convene in Khiva City in May 2024. These initiatives are expected to not only boost tourism in Khiva but also enhance its reputation as a cultural hub within the OIC community and the global tourism landscape.
