Uzbekistan Goes to Polls Tomorrow as Four Candidates Vie for Presidential Office

TASHKENT: In what is being seen as the biggest political contest in the Republic of Uzbekistan, 22.2 million voters will choose their next president tomorrow (Sunday).

On 8 May, President Mirziyoyev, also a candidate in Sunday’s election, announced an early presidential election to held on 9 July 2023. He cited continuation of structural reforms, balancing all branches of power, creation of new checks & balances among the various organs of the State as the reasons for seeking fresh electoral mandate directly of the voters/common people.

Incumbent President Shavkat Mirziyoyev who is also vying for the slot, represents Liberal Democratic Party; Ulugbek Inoyatov is from The Peoples’ Democratic Party; Robakhon Makhmudova is of Social Democratic Party Adolat; while the Ecological Party has fielded Abdushukur Khamzaev for the contest.

Political model of Uzbekistan suggests presidential constitutional democracy, two Chamber of Parliament (Oliy Majilis, Senate) Legislative Powers, multiparty democracy and existence of opposition. Executive power is used by Prime Minister and the government while judicial power is used by the Supreme Court, Constitutional Court and Higher Economic Court.

The uniqueness of the political model of Uzbekistan is direct election for every constitutional slot even for small town and rural regions etc. Mohala system, height of political de-centralization, humanistic, holistic societal development, community development and Islamic model of the provision & protection of services, basic necessities of life, human rights and conflict resolution.
