TASHKENT: The governor of Tashkent has urged greater economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and Pakistan, saying the current bilateral trade volume of $445 million falls short of the true potential of the two countries’ partnership.
Speaking during a recent meeting, the governor stressed the need to strengthen economic relations and explore new areas of cooperation. He noted that both countries possess significant potential to expand collaboration in trade, investment and other key sectors.
He highlighted that Uzbekistan and Pakistan share deep historical and cultural links, which provide a strong basis for enhancing economic engagement. Despite these longstanding ties, he said the existing level of trade remains relatively modest and could grow substantially with stronger coordination.
The governor suggested that both nations could benefit from deeper cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, textiles, pharmaceuticals and logistics. He also emphasised the importance of promoting business-to-business interactions and reducing trade barriers to encourage greater commercial activity.
Enhanced transport links
Referring to the current trade volume, he remarked that economic exchanges worth $445 million do not fully reflect the opportunities available between the two countries and called on stakeholders to work collectively to expand bilateral trade.
He also highlighted Uzbekistan’s interest in improving connectivity with Pakistan through enhanced transport links and trade corridors, which could support regional integration and boost economic development.
Officials from both sides expressed optimism about the prospects for stronger bilateral relations and agreed to continue efforts aimed at increasing trade volumes and expanding cooperation in priority sectors.
