TASHKENT: Uzbekistan has marked a significant step forward in nuclear infrastructure and medical development with the approval of five national projects at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Uzbek government’s press service confirmed this development on Monday, highlighting the adoption of these projects by the IAEA’s Board of Governors.

The newly approved projects, slated for implementation in the 2024-2025 cycle, encompass a broad spectrum of initiatives aimed at strengthening Uzbekistan’s capabilities in the nuclear sector and advancing medical technologies.

Three of the projects are focused on enhancing domestic capacity for nuclear industry infrastructure development. This includes efforts to bolster regulatory frameworks, ensuring effective oversight in the nuclear power industry, and promoting safety and operational excellence. Additionally, one project aims to establish a stable isotope laboratory dedicated to monitoring water resources and pollution sources.

Uzbekistan’s Commitment to Safe and Responsible Development of Nuclear Energy Program

The fifth project is a crucial step in expanding and fortifying radiation medicine, specifically for cancer treatment. The initiative seeks to reduce cancer mortality rates by introducing advanced technologies such as radiation therapy and diagnostic radiology, emphasizing the role of nuclear medicine in healthcare.

This strategic move aligns with Uzbekistan’s commitment to the safe and responsible development of its nuclear energy program. A noteworthy milestone in this regard was the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) mission conducted by the IAEA in June 2021. The mission’s findings affirmed strong government support for Uzbekistan’s nuclear energy program and highlighted the nation’s dedication to safety, security, and non-proliferation.
