NEW YORK: Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev issued a stark warning at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, cautioning against “leaving Afghanistan alone” with its pressing challenges. Mirziyoyev emphasized that international engagement remains critical, as the situation in Afghanistan directly impacts global security and demands a unique approach to address the Afghan crisis.

Mirziyoyev underscored that neglecting, isolating, or imposing sanctions on Afghanistan would only intensify the hardships faced by its citizens. He advocated for maintaining humanitarian aid levels to Afghanistan and urged the development of mechanisms to utilize the country’s frozen international assets to address urgent social issues.

“We need an open, peaceful, and sustainable Afghanistan that actively participates in regional cooperation initiatives and seeks mutually beneficial partnerships with its neighbors and other nations,” Mirziyoyev stressed. He called upon the international community to unite in addressing the Afghan issue under the leadership of the United Nations and to develop a flexible and constructive approach.

Turkish President Calls for Supporting Afghanistan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan echoed the need for humanitarian assistance and support for the Afghan people. He emphasized the importance of transforming the interim government into an inclusive administration that fairly represents all segments of Afghan society.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, where 70% of the population requires assistance, and where the rights of women and girls continue to be systematically denied.

Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar emphasized his country’s role in coordinating international efforts and facilitating dialogue between the United Nations, relevant countries, and Afghanistan’s caretaker government (IEA). He stressed the importance of ensuring compliance with the Doha Agreement and preventing Afghanistan from descending into a humanitarian crisis or becoming a sanctuary for terrorists.

Notably, Afghanistan’s seat at the UN General Assembly remained vacant this year due to the Islamic Emirate’s lack of global recognition as the legitimate government.
